An occasional note of news and information about what’s going on at Armadale UC
FAREWELL TO JUDITH
As most of us know, Judith announced in December that she has accepted a call from the St Luke's Parish in Mt Waverley and is to commence duties there on 1 March. This means that the service on 24 February will be the last occasion on which Judith will lead worship as our Parish Minister. We are planning to give everyone an opportunity to show our appreciation for the ministry she has offered and the contribution she has made to our Parish life. The service on Sunday 24 February will contain a special liturgy for the release from pastoral ties to the Parish. The service will be followed by a function in the Hall in Judith's honour at 12.00 noon, to which everyone is invited.
DATES FOR THE DIARY
Communion services. These will continue to occur on the first Sunday of every month – that is Sundays 3 February (the Covenant Service), 2 March, 6 April and 4 May. Communion will also be celebrated on Easter Sunday, 23 March.
Sunday 10 February. Following our normal service, we’ll be joined at lunch by our friends from Armadale Baptist Church and Holy Advent. Contributions of something for the lunch would be appreciated – please complete the form near the kitchen (or see Robin Ahin).
Ash Wednesday this year is Wednesday 6 February, so the first Sunday in Lent is 10 February 2007.
Easter. Services this year are yet to be confirmed, but we’re planning:
Maundy Thursday – 20 March 2008 - Tenebrae (time to be advised).
Good Friday – 21 March 2008 – probably at 9.30, but to be confirmed.
Easter Sunday -- 23 March 2008, 10 am (with Communion).
LENTEN STUDIES
Judith will lead a Lenten studies program, so if you’re interested, please let her know so that a suitable time can be arranged. After Judith’s final service, the program will be completed by another leader.
STEPS TOWARD A CALL
In line with Uniting Church procedures, we’ve established a Joint Nominating Committee (the Congregation voted on this on 16 December), and the next step is to finalise our Parish profile. This will be reviewed by the Church Council and at the short congregational meeting to be held after church on Sunday 3 February. The Parish profile then goes to Presbytery’s Pastoral Relations Committee for review and comment, and then to the Synod Placements Committee. The Placements Committee will then suggest some possible names to the JNC, and from then on the JNC (which includes a Presbytery representative) will talk with various ministers to carefully and prayerfully discern who might be the right person to call to Armadale. When a name is decided on, it is presented to the congregation before a call is issued.
SUPPLY
Pending the call of a new Minister, arrangements have been made to have the necessary pastoral support in place. Martin Wright, a certificated candidate (that means he's completed all the required study) will be providing supply, with 2 days a week pastoral care and leading the Sunday services. As Martin is completing his Masters and is not yet ordained, Reverend David Beswick will lead the Communion services on the 1st Sunday of the month. David and Martin will lead the Communion service on Easter Sunday.
SHROVE TUESDAY
To mark the beginning of Lent, we’re planning to have pancakes with tea/coffee after the Covenant Service on Sunday 3 February, so come prepared. A small donation will go towards UnitingCare.
Also, UnitingCare Pancake Day is held every Shrove Tuesday and is the national fundraising event in the UnitingCare calendar. This year, Shrove Tuesday is Tuesday 5 February and Prahran Mission will host a spectacular Pancake Day open to all at 211 Chapel Street, Prahran. So, if you’re down that way on the day, please call in and have a pancake. All monies raised on the day will be used to purchase equipment for the Mission’s hospitality training students.
Business and community groups can obtain free pancake mix and syrup from Uniting Care if they wish to organise their own fundraising activity.
GARAGE SALE
We’re planning a Garage Sale on Saturday 1 March 2008, from 9.30 am. Please look out anything that you no longer need and which might be suitable for sale, and drop if off whenever convenient. It can be stored in the small room just before the Reta Berry Room. If you have anything that needs to be collected, please ring Graeme Harris on 9504 8234 or Bill Rush on 9822 7703 either of whom will be happy to make arrangements to come by at a convenient time.
DATA PROJECTOR
The data projector has arrived, and we’re forward to seeing it in action. Donations to help with the cost would be appreciated, and can be given to Betty Terrell, or sent to her at Unit 5, 29 Mercer Rd, Armadale Vic 3143.
USED STAMPS
The voluntary “Sammy Stamp” group at Synod still collects and processes used postage stamps, and make quite a significant amount of money from them. For many years, stamps have been collected by members of the UCF, and they are still happy to do this and to arrange for them to be taken into the Synod office. You can also leave them on the table outside the kitchen. Alternatively, if you’re in the city, you can take them in to the receptionist at 130 Little Collins Street, or give them to Graeme Harris who will be happy to drop them off.
“Sammy Stamp” also collects used travel cards, so please leave them with your stamps
